“After checking the roof, they said there were some problems that needed to be fixed,” Scott wrote in his report. “The owner told them to fix the problems. They messed around on the roof for a while and then told the homeowner they needed over $1,700 for the repairs.”
The homeowner gave them a check and the three individuals left immediately to try and cash it, but the M&T Bank in Chambersburg refused to process the request because of how the check was written, Scott said.
“The bank contacted the homeowner and by then he had reservations about the individuals and told them not to cash the check,” Scott wrote. “The homeowner contacted the original roofing company and they did not have any knowledge of the individuals.”
The three individuals then came back to the residence to get another check, but when they arrived, the original roofing company was present and they fled.
They were driving a late 80s or early 90s Ford pickup truck, black in color, with a toolbox and ladder on the back, Scott said. All three were very young and one of them had a severe case of acne on his face.
The name Joseph B. Crowlin was written on the check when they attempted to cash it, Scott said.
