LEXINGTON — Two of Lexington’s elementary schools will be repaired this summer.
During a special meeting Friday morning, the Lexington Board of Education accepted a $94,500 bid from Conditioned Air Mechanical of Grand Island to upgrade the heating and air-conditioning system at Sandoz Elementary School.
The board also accepted a $206,638 bid from Weathercraft Roofing of Lexington to replace the roof at Bryan Elementary School.
Maintenance Supervisor Bo Berry told the board that one of two boilers used for heating at Sandoz is bad. The boilers are original to the 1976 building. Berry said another issue at the school is the cooling towers that are caked by lime scale. Acid wash to remove the buildup has not been effective.
Berry recommended changing both boilers and replacing the cooling towers.
In anticipation of the need, the district set aside money in the depreciation fund. “It is under what I budgeted of $130,000,” Berry said of the Sandoz work.
Berry said $180,000 had been budgeted to replace the roof at Bryan, but the low bid came in higher than expected.
“Part of this greater expense is the addition of insulation,” Berry said, noting there is no insulation on the roof deck and little below the ceiling area.
Berry said the roof at Bryan is 23 years old and came with a warranty for 15 years. The new roof will have a 20-year warranty.
“It’s time for the roof to be replaced,” Berry said. “It’s surpassed its life expectancy by 2½ to three years.”
In other business Friday, the board agreed to partner with the city of Lexington to purchase an LED sign to be placed at the Opportunity Center.
The board approved contributing $20,000 toward a $60,000 sign and stipulated that the 9-foot by 13-foot sign not be used for commercial advertising and that the school district would get at least one-third of the sign’s use. Board members also said the city would be responsible for maintenance.
“It does look sharp out there. I think it (the sign) will dress it up,” board member Rod Reynolds said.
“It’s a great opportunity to get our messages out there. It is a high-traffic area,” board President Kent Gydesen said.
The board will meet again at 7 p.m. June 13 for a regular meeting.
